I'm not ready to race. But I would like to try a track day sometime.
I've got a '98 VTR, a new helmet and I've read "A Twist of the Wrist" cover to cover.
How does this work? Do I need a club membership? Special equipment? What will it cost?

Leather suit, gloves, boots, helmet, good tires(prefer race gp compound),good brakes, tape or remove all lights, remove anti freeze and put in water(not sure if you have to on track days but it is a safety issue)......track days require that you pay for a spot and ride in the group you belong in (street riders have their own group) you do not need a license or memberships. I recommend Adrenaline freeks becouse they have professional instructors and a very well kept track day. I highely recommend you experience the race track,it will improve your skills and may lead to a fun racing career!! Basically, prep your bike, prep your equipment, pay the fees and ride! Hope this helps. Sam #455

Review this site. They even offer a free taste before you spend a cent.

March 19 is the beginning for this year at PIR and be prepared to get hooked on track days and possibly racing.
Good luck.

Like mentioned above, check out the local trackday providers websites, they offer good info on bike prep, gear requirements, how the day works from start to finish etc. And also,,, make sure you have a great credit line! The track is beyond words as far as how addictive it can be. It is also the best environment to learn just how much potential a bike has and how little of it we actually use on the street! haha
Buona fortuna!

I like doing M.C. track days. they were $185 last year, but they may have raised prices since PIR is going to charge more for renting out the track since repaving the track was so expensive. there are 3 groups to ride in. A,B, and C. A group is all the racers who are there to practice, B group has a wide variety of riders, but have proven that they are consistent in the corners and wont be a threat to others. Meaning they don't break line and fade or cut in which can cause an accident. C group- the morning you stay in office while A and B group are running. They give you some good information and then they take you out in a controlled follow the leader. They do a couple drills in 2 sessions and then you are off to ride at your comfort. each group gets 20 mins. to run, and then the next group gets ready to ride. I would highly recommend doing a track day, but just to warn you....start saving money now, cuz once you start you wont want to stop!!! :-) Good luck

Not if you stay on the Forum and out of the shop. Ed has this little technique that starts with, "Now, if this was MY bike ......." Next thing you know you're shit hot coating the interior of your brake lines, degreeing the cam in the counter rotating ambulator, replacing perfectly good hard parts, etc.

It's tough being a guy. Do I really need more power? Definitely not. Will that stop me from the pursuit? Uh, no.
Next weekend I install the "Wing Thing" vortex generator in the airbox, the atomic fuel alignment magnets and dump in a can of "Super Mojo Gas Power Up"...
Should be good for 10's in the quarter. If I can find traction...

Did Eric sell you the alignment magnets too? I'm not sure mine are working. I don't seem to have more power, but at least I don't have trouble tripping stoplights anymore. That alone was worth the $395.00 he charged me, and my joints feel better too.
Seriously though, track days are expensive, but so is crashing. If you improve your riding from the experience, it's worth the cost many times over.

Funny story (OK, I thought it was funny):
Years back, my young son and I were at the filling station when, pointing at the self-serve air compressor / radiator water hose box, he asked: "Dad, what is water air?"
