My '98 Honda VTR has a front brake problem.

Applying gradually increasing pressure to the lever does not result in the expected linear, progressively stronger, braking. Instead the brakes are relatively weak until, what I would describe as, the "stiction" is overcome. Then the brake is very strong. A somewhat clumsey way to ride, especially with a passenger.

My guess is that I have a master cylinder concern, but it's just a guess. I thought I'd change the brake fluid with the recommended number fluid to start.

Any ideas?

Is your brake fluid color dark? That = burnt and will not perform to standard. Are your brake lines stock (rubber). If so they are most likely expanding under pressure and should/need to be replaced. Recommand replacing them with steel braided or equivelant Kevlar variety. If that does not remedy your issue, then you will need to look at the Master Cylinder or calipers. Someone else with more expereince will need to chime in regarding the last two items.

check the pivot bolt! they corrode. Honestly, simple but remove the brake lever bolt, clean and lube it...honestly very common on the honda's

Another thing to check is which pads are installed. My F4 had similar brakes, and the stock pads behaved like that, even with braided lines. No initial bite, "wooden" feeling, although they would stop the bike when I really cranked on them. I don't recall what EDR sold me, but aftermarket pads made a big difference.

EBC's drag and grab alot. Might try a different pad if you have them??
