I saw this on another forum and it sounds like someone is smoking crack to me. However, I thought I'd throw it on here and perhaps Barry or someone could put up some REAL and trustworthy info....

Here is a tidbit of information you "Heat Cycle" enthusiast may want to ponder over. At one of Pridmores schools at Thunder Hill earlier this year, one of Dunlops Tech Reps happen to be there. He was ask that age old question "Just how many heat cycles can one expect from a race tire"? His response was, "Heat cycle problems with tires are a thing of the past. All modern day tires will be long worn out before you will ever bake them with heat cycles"! I don't remember the guys name but he was direct from the Dunlop Factory. True or not, you decide! However, it did come from the horses mouth!

Is there any truth to that, or is it just typical internet misinformation? All I've ever heard is heat cycles and tires turning blue = trash.

If the "Dunlop Rep in question" is wrong, I have some blue front take offs I'd LOVE to see him use for a couple of hot laps. LOL!

With enough heat cycles any tire would turn to trash. How many heat cycles? I have no idea.

To that rep's point I usually just keep riding on mine until the rubber is worn out. I don't go as fast on worn tires, but at worst I'm usually only a second or so off the pace. Also, blued tires doesn't necessarily mean they're trash - I usually run heat races on old (sometimes blued, sometimes not) tires.

I totally agree with the rep,I run my Dunlops until the tread is gone and dont even think about heat cycles anymore. Another thing to ponder is.......on track days or practice I always put my warmers on after every session so technically speaking I only go through one heat cycle a day, would that be correct?

From what I have been told, a blue color can come out of the rubber because of the oils within the carcus that have been brought to the surface after cooling from a heat cycle. I have specifically been told that just because there is a shade of blue on the rubber doesn't mean that the tire is bad. But have also been told that after a certain amount of heat cycles the tire may become harder after so many cool downs, which my dunlop qual have definitely become harder. I'm sure Eric could tell you since I'm not as knowledgeable as he is, though I am better looking :na:

i think nowadays the tires take the heat cycles MUCH better so much so that it is not a huge issue. I do know that the pirellis fall off VERY fast however after a heat cycle or two...at least that is what i am told by top riders that have been on both. Plus, if you notice the mains at PIR/SIR, the pirelli guys always have brand new tires for mains, while alot of dunlop guys can use the same from the qualifiers!
