Someone pleeeeeease tell me this is not what it's like here all the time!

No car, no bike (yet) so I have to take the bus and max to work. Leaving work last night, on the bus, I start to chat it up with the bus driver. I tell him I recently moved to Portland and he goes off on how Portland has the highest suicide rate of any other city. Telling be where all the popular places to take a jump is at. Then goes on about the economy and how shitty it will be next year.Yay! Telling me most likely there will be at least one person riding the bus or max with me will be packing heat. People get fucking mugged all the time on the busses and drivers can't and won't do dick about it. He was totally freaking me out the whole time! Damn good this I got some mace as a welcome gift! ;)

THEN! When I was on the max, a crack head begged me for the leftover pizza I was holding! Told him no, then he proceeded to pick at the fucking scabs on his legs. He was acting all weird and sketchy. I'm not going to lie, I though I was going to have to mace the shit outta him and I was actually a lil excited about it!

Hmmmm, maybe I should just move back to a suburb!

I have ridden max ONCE..its a FUCKING JOKE! WE have to pay for it so the homeless, lazy, retarded and disqusting pigs can ride it..most free.

Maybe Max has gone downhill since I lived there in the late 90's but I loved it. Get drunk @ blazers game and no need for DD. It took my ass to within a block of my house. :)

The bus driver is an idiot. We do not have a high suicide rate comparatively speaking. There is alot of people who pack. But mostly legally and the people you want carrying. You should think about getting a CHL and carrying too.

If you're within a block of the max it is nice for that, except it also puts the crackheads within a block of your house. :)

????? Portland Does have a very high suicide rate, what does,,,"packing" have to do with it? Why should she get a chl? Because she is familiar with weapons? I think that most that carry shouldnt, I think being aware of your surroundings is a much better option than "packing", there are alot of you that do, however as I have said before, I am willing to bet in the "moment" the majority would freeze, shit their pants, or pull their weapon unnecessarily and fire off target. My two cents, but what do I know...Oh yeah..I have alot of exp with weapons.

Hey Foxy, just remember its all relative. If you compare our stats to those of MANY other cities, states or countries Portland doesn't look bad. In fact it looks pretty f'n good! Don't let the over reacting, hyper sensitive, doom and gloom disgruntled bus driver freak you out, and the crack heads,,,, well they are everywhere. Having rode the bus quite a bit for school downtown in the past, I can also tell you the "quality" of people on the bus/max changes depending on the time of day you ride (like first thing in the am and pm with all the "suits").
Oh, and welcome to Portland!

In the meantime, take a deep breath. Its not as bad as the pesimistic bus driver says. We do have a large population of ramblers/bums/homeless whatever you wanna call them, but I have never been accosted by them.

Always be aware of your surroundings and if you see a situation that could go south, take steps to remove yourself from there. That alone has saved my hide many times.

Oregon is 41st. So not first and not that close to first in suicide rates. That was as of 2007.

Carrying has nothing to do with suicide George. It has everything to do with crackheads and protecting yourself. I agree that some people that carry should not. But I also agree that some people who ride should not. It's not really a relavent argument on an individual basis. I know people with very little weapons experience I would trust by my side in a real HOLY SHIT situation more than some cops I know. It has less to do with competency with a weapon and more about one's mental capacity in an emergent or high stress situation. Don't ever assume that just because someone has been trained to handle a weapon even in emergency situation that when that moment actually comes you can count on them without question.
To me it's very comparable to that idiot that was bragging to me on 23rd that he has been riding for 25 years. When I knew for a fact in my 2 years I was already a better rider than he ever was or would be.
