Nice bikes but really, $80K?!? I think Ducati makes a nice bike and all but... well.... All right, I was at Ducati Seattle today and some very enthusiastic salesman was trying to convince me that $30K for a 1098R was a really a very good deal "I think they're really worth $40-$50K". When I mentioned that I was a Suzuki fan he proceeded to get the Roadracing World mag to quote to me how the writers really loved the 1098 better. I couldn't help wondering what Eric would do with $20K and an 08 GSXR 1000.

$30k is a STEAL for that 1098R for what you get john..you could NOT build a bike for that $$ for what it has!!
as for $20k and a 2008 GSXR1000??? LETS FIND OUT...STEP UP!!!!

First you're not getting a 1098R for $30k. They are $40k and like Eric said, you can't build what they're selling for $40k. It's a sweet machine.
As for the Desmo, I think you're missing the points. It's a novelty to own a bike that is basically a detuned MotoGP bike. You cannot compare a Desmo to a Gix. I love my gix, but there is no comparison.

I agree completely, that there is no comparison between Desmo and a GSXR. I think the Desmo is super cool and I'd love to own one in my next life. I'm really very proud of Ducati for producing this bike, it takes real stones from any manufacturer to make a machine like this available to the public at any price. I'd pay $80K for a Desmo before I'd pay $40K for a 1098R.
I still hold out that, for $40K, I could build a bike that would send a 1098R to the lunch line in every area of performance.

Pacific Raceways in seattle. Used to be called Seattle Int'l Raceways.
Basically its like a walmart parking lot that someone drew some white lines around for 2 miles, added a ton of walls, threw in some pot holes, forgot what weed killer is and said "hey ride your bikes around this at 180mph"
:(

I do not chime in to much as I am no expert but I do know a liitle about the 1098R and I also know a bit about local builds. I know that Lash has built a gsxr1000 super bike and he has spent a great deal of money to build this machine and has many hours tuning and sorting this machine out.
I rode the 1098R at Barber and was blown away by the performance of this machine slipper clutch and soft rev limiter very nice. When we arrived at the track it was 39 degrees and I was nervous, however the traction control allowed me to rail around and as they day changed so did my set up, super cool.
They built 1200 and only 450 came to the states this was to comply with world super bike homologation rules which are very strict which is cool because this bike is very close to Bayliss's machine and it comes with a two year warranty from the factory. That is some pretty heavy buy in from the manufacturer.
We have some very talented people here in the Northwest and I believe they will all say that this bike is worth every penny of the 39,995.00.

If I had disposable income I would own a 1098R. The Desmosedici would really be a unique luxury but I'd be afraid of tossing it during a spirited run. Affordable they are not. Are they worth it? I suppose so but not the best bang for your buck. I would have more fun building and riding a $40K+ carbon clad GSX-R. Pure love and compassion that would be.
